These sperm whales live up to about 17-23 years, measure between 2.7 and 3.4 meters, and weigh between 315 and 400 kg. They are carnivorous and primarily feed on fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Pygmy sperm whales live in deep waters (up to 600m), often near the continental shelf. They inhabit tropical and warm temperate waters.

Females can give birth to a calf every year after a gestation period of 9 to 12 months. Births occur in the spring.

Head

Conical, with a bracket-shaped mark resembling a gill between the eyes and pectorals, small square rostrum, blowhole slightly shifted to the left.

Dorsal Fin & Fins

Small curved dorsal fin located three-quarters of the way down the body, short and wide pectoral fins placed very far forward on the body, pale circular mark under and around the eye.

Coloration

Dorsal side steel gray, ventral side pinkish white.
