ATLANTIC SPOTTED DOLPHIN

Stenella Frontalis

Sea

Order

Odontoceti

Family

Delphinidae

These dolphins live up to around 50 years, measure between 1.6 - 2.3 meters, and weigh between 100 and 140 kg. Close to the coast, they feed on fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Offshore, their diet mainly consists of pelagic fish and squid.

Present in the Western and Southeastern Atlantic, Atlantic spotted dolphins enjoy tropical waters near the coasts and offshore. However, they are rarely found in the Caribbean and are more commonly found in the Bahamas, where they favor shallow sandy bottoms.

The reproduction of Atlantic spotted dolphins is poorly understood. However, we know that females can give birth to a calf every three to four years after a gestation period of 11 to 12 months.
